It Security for Free

There are a number of steps that you can take that will increase your IT Security and won’t cost you anything but time.

Increasing security awareness in all your staff is a wise investment of time. Give security a kickstart with a short talk to emphasize the importance of keeping business information secure and IT equipment safe. Then follow it up with posters and regular email reminders to help good security become a habit.

Check out the default installations of your office software. Replace default passwords with strong ones and restrict access only to those who need it and especially restrict the access for “guest users”. And don’t forget to remove access/ logins/ passwords when a member of staff leaves.

Watch out for physical security too. Basics such as not leaving unattended computers logged into networks and programs are often overlooked and
distraction has resulted in many a laptop being left in a taxi or on a bus.

If the worst does happen at least by using strong passwords and restricting access you can limit the potential damage thieves can cause.
