Spam
- a growing problem
Spam
is the pseudonym for any email which is unsolicited and unwanted.
Unfortunately it is a growing problem and it is now estimated
that a massive 40-50% of all email is classified as spam.
From October 2003 EU directives will outlaw unsolicited email
to personal email addresses and businesses will be required
to use opt in email lists in the EU.
But
most spammers are not operating within the law, many operate
from outside the EU and this will not protect your business
email.
Spam
is a problem which is not going to go away any time soon.
It
is costly and disruptive
Unlike
junk postal mail, you pay for the delivery of spam. Your telephone
connection is used to download the email and your time is
wasted identifying and deleting it. And mistakes can be costly
- its easy to delete real email when wading through
spam.

Spam
is often offensive
Your
staff may be offended or demoralised by the constant barrage
of lose weight by...get your viagra here...get rich quick...or
view teen girls. Scams, porn and other unwanted nasties pour
into their mail boxes daily.
Spammers
can get you blacklisted
If
you have a mail server connected to the Internet which is
not correctly set up you may even have unwittingly provided
the means for a spammer to deliver millions of spam-mail to
other Internet users.
This
can lead to being blacklisted by ISPs worldwide who refuse
to carry mail for you until you rectify the problem. And often
forgotten... mailserver abuse can result in massive telephone
bills.
You
may even have a script on your web site which has been used
by spammers to send unsolicited email.
It
all wastes time, distracts staff and reduces productivity.
